The museum originated because the Fortress Foundation has been committed to maintaining, renovating and opening the Dutch and German defences in Hoek van Holland to the public since 1996. The visitor centre, the Atlantikwall Museum, is located by the pier in the so-called table bunker. Here, the visitor can learn everything about what is left of this mighty defence line. The information is aimed at the Atlantikwall surrounding Hoek van Holland, but it also relates to the Second World War all over the Netherlands.
The museum even functions as a history museum, with objects from various eras, and as a war museum with tangible proof from the 1940-1945 period. It is best to see some of the Atlantikwall with your own eyes during a tour of Hoek van Holland or during a boat trip that passes through the second tank ditch in the Westland.
